SAMAR Rep. Edgar Mary Sarmiento said Sunday he will support bills on funding the rehabilitation of Marawi, Freedom of Information (FOI), and national ID during the Second Regular Session of Congress.

“I hope the Development Budget Coordination Committee (DBCC) has greatly considered the rehabilitation needs for Marawi as they are expected to submit to Congress the 2018 General Appropriations Bill (GAB) also this week. If not included in the GAB or if found insufficient, President Duterte can expect my full support in pushing for a Special Appropriations Bill for rebuilding Marawi. I believe any bill for funding the rehabilitation of Marawi will draw support across party lines,” said Sarmiento.

Sarmiento said the FOI must be a law soon.

“While we have an EO on the FOI, let us give the people a more unalterable weapon in ensuring transparency in government,” he said.

To better combat terrorism, the Unified National ID System is a must, according to Sarmiento.

A bill on a national ID was already filed by House appropriations committee chairman Karlo Nograles and is a good working draft, but the congressman said “we have to balance this with our citizens’ right to privacy”.

Meanwhile, Sarmiento said the President should be commended for certifying as urgent the Comprehensive Tax Reform Bill.

“It is a game-changing piece of legislation that is expected to give government a more efficient collection and revenue-generating mechanism,” said Sarmiento.

Sarmiento said he hopes the President will also feel the urgency in putting in place more stringent banking policies.

Cong. Ben Evardone will be conducting an investigation on the recent Metrobank fraud perpetrated by one of their executives. We hope Malacañang will back the findings and recommendations of the Committee.
